Assisting Ukraine with legal and institutional development in nature conservation

10. 3. 2025

Legal experts of the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic and the Ukrainian Environment-People-Law completed the first phase of the enhancement of Ukrainian legal system and approximation to the EU laws on nature conservation.

Two year project is funded by the European Union – LIFE Programme, and co-financed by the Czech Ministry of Environment.

“In addition to legal requirements of the EU, institutional support and governance of biodiversity conservation has been assessed. Together with our Ukrainian partners we are going to propose changes and adjustments to the Ukrainian Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. The Ukrainian partners make a very good job despite the war in their country,“ said David Lacina, a project manager from Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic stated.

All activities planned in the LIFE Ukraine project are implemented according to the schedule. Representatives of the protected areas in Ukraine, journalists and employees of the Ukrainian Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources visited Czech protected areas last years in order to get familiar with nature conservation practice in the Czech Republic and the European Union.

Sylvia Barova from CINEA LIFE Programme commented the project during the monitoring mission as follows: “It is great to see this strong and fruitful partnership between the Czech Nature Conservation Agency and various organizations and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine. This EU LIFE programme co-financed project is helping Ukraine to create effective governance and management of the EMERALD network of protected areas and to share best practices and the EU approach in protecting nature so that the rich biodiversity of Ukraine is valued and preserved for the future generations.”

Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic in close cooperation with Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group – UNCG prepare a citizen science activity for the Ukrainian public focused on collecting information on Ukrainian biodiversity using iNaturalist and thus promoting the interest in nature and biodiversity. This bioblitz will start on the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22, 2025.
